HIGHLIGHTS: Lake Nottely is a 4,180-acre Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir located in Union County near Blairsville. The reservoir was built during World War II and is on the southeastern edge of the Tennessee River watershed. The Chattahoochee National Forest borders the lake to the East and ~70% of the shoreline is under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service and remains undeveloped. The lake has a swim beach and a drive-in camping area which is especially popular in the summer time. Nottely Reservoir serves a number of purposes other than recreation, including flood damage reduction and power generation.
This short kayaking trip started from a friends dock near the damn, but you can drop in at a boat ramp in the area and paddle about the same distance. We took kayaks to a small island near the damn where we sat out a summer thunderstorm. Since some of this area is Forest Service land - it is available to overnight camping.
